Gaza needs more than condemnation (Haidar Eid) - 26-jul-2014

July 18, 2014- The Palestinians of Gaza, naively, went to the polling station in January 2006, mistakenly believing the Bush doctrine of bringing democracy to the Middle East — in spite of him being responsible for the brutal massacre of hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan. People voted, but not for the preferred choice of the Israelis, or their American backers and the Arab dictators. The Palestinian choice was against the peace process industry, against the fiction that is the ever-slippery two-state solution, against the corruption of the Oslo-era nouveau riche...

Medical sources: Israel using unfamiliar toxic gas against Palestinians in Gaza (Middle East Monitor) - 26-jul-2014

July 18, 2014 -Dozens of Palestinians, including children, suffered from suffocation on Thursday due to inhaling what is being described as a "strange toxic gas" launched by the Israeli army during its ground incursion in the north and south of the Gaza Strip, Anadolu news agency reported. Anadolu quoted Dr. Ashraf Al-Qidra, a spokesperson for the Health Ministry in Gaza, as saying that: "Dozens of Palestinians, including children, arrived at hospitals suffering from suffocation after inhaling a white poisonous gas fired by the Israeli army in the northern Gaza Strip and in the Shawkah neighbourhood near Rafah, to the south."...

What Corporate Media and Corporate Latino Politicians Won't Tell You About Central American Child Refugees (Bruce A. Dixon) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - ...Latino voters and the Latino political class supported the career of Barack Obama almost as solidly as blacks. They were promised much more than African Americans, but in the end got much less. Latinis were promised that the unjust immigration system would be fixed and a road to citizenship created for the millions of undocumented living among us. What Latino voters and the Latino political class got in return for their support of Obama was two million deportations, hundreds of thousands of families brutally separated and scattered by law, not entirely unlike black families in this country once were...

Since the Beginning of the Israeli Offensive on Gaza: 221 Palestinians Killed, of Whom 179 Are Civilians, Including 45 Children and 32 Women, and 1,458 Others Wounded, Mostly Civilians, Including 432 Children and 298 Women; (The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR)) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014-Israeli occupation forces have continued their brutal and immoral offensive on the Gaza Strip for the 8th consecutive day, and have continued the policy of collective punishment in disregard for the international law and humanitarian law, which ensure protection for civilians in times of war, and in violation of the principles of necessity, proportionality and distinction. Israeli forces have continued their aerial, ground and sea attacks throughout the Gaza Strip, causing more civilian casualties and damaging civilian facilities, including houses and mosques. In disregard for the lives of children, Israeli forces killed 4 Palestinian children while they were playing at the beach in Gaza City. ...

Testimony from Gaza: “You leave your home to die a thousand times, or refuse to leave and die once.” (Mahmoud Jouda) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - Mahmoud Jouda, a Palestinian living in the Gaza Strip describes the experience of receiving an evacuation order from Israeli forces: "I'll tell you what is harder than dying in Gaza by an Israeli missile deluxe. What is harder is that you get a phone call from the Israeli army telling you to evacuate your home because it will be bombed in ten minutes. Imagine; ten minutes; and your whole short history on the surface of Earth will be erased. Gifts you received, photos of your siblings and your children (dead or alive), things that you love, your favorite chair, your books, that last poetry collection your read, a letter from your expatriate sister, reminders of the ones you loved, the smell of your bed, the jasmine tree that hangs off your western window, your daughter’s hair clip, your old clothes, your prayer rug, your wife’s gold, your savings; imagine; all this passes in front of your eyes in ten minutes, all that pain passes while you are struck by surprise."

Gazans in West Bank fear for their loved ones (Ahmad Melhem) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - With each raid that Israeli planes launch on the Gaza Strip, Sameh, 38, grabs his mobile phone and calls his family there to make sure they’re fine.Sameh, who preferred to give his first name only, hailed from the Gaza Strip, which he left 20 years ago. He works in Ramallah. "I'm constantly and persistently following what is happening. I sit at the breakfast table, with my phone by my side. I contact my parents and friends as soon as I hear about a raid in any region close to my family. I even take my phone with me into the shower," he told Al-Monitor...

Gaza on Brink of Acute Water Crisis: Red Cross (Andrea Germanos) - 26-jul-2014

July 16, 2014- The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that the population of Gaza is on the brink of an "acute water crisis." "Hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza are now without water," Jacques de Maio, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Israel and the occupied territories, said in statement released Tuesday. "Within days, the entire population of the Strip may be desperately short of water," he stated.
The roughly 140 square mile territory is home to at least 1.5 million people. The blockaded territory's already fragile water infrastructure has been damaged by the current military operation, and the unsafe situation has made it impossible for technicians to carry out needed repairs, the organization adds...

No escape for civilians in Gaza (Asmaa al-Ghoul) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - ...Israeli author Gideon Levy criticized in Haaretz newspaper what he calls the war against innocent civilians: "It is the war of the elephant against a fly. The retired generals who are still effectively working are adopting a savage approach. Those include Maj. Gen. Oren Shachor, who said without blinking, 'If we kill their families, this will scare them.'" This is no longer just about war crimes, but rather about the recurrence of crimes that no one seems willing to stop. The killing of children, the destruction of residential homes while inhabitants are inside, all these crimes classify as severe violations of the 1949 Geneva Conventions....

Fugitive Iraqi leader warns against third term for Al Maliki (Piotr Zalewski) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 -Without a change in government, Iraq’s Sunni population could grow to sympathise with militants from the Islamic State, the country’s fugitive vice president says. Tariq Al Hashemi fled Iraq in 2012 after being accused of running a Sunni death squad, a charge he denies. He found refuge in Turkey and was later sentenced to death in absentia by an Iraqi court. Speaking to The National by phone, Mr Al Hashemi insisted that the crisis gripping Iraq would only grow worse if prime minister Nouri Al Maliki returned for a third term as premier. "Voting for Maliki is a vote for splitting Iraq," he said, commenting on the efforts to form a new government in Baghdad. "This gentleman has been the main cause of the instability."....

Meshaal speaks out on possible cease-fire (Adnan Abu Amer) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - ....The leader of Hamas’ political bureau, Khaled Meshaal, has reiterated in an exclusive interview with Al-Monitor that his movement will not agree to a cease-fire that does not result in the lifting of the siege on Gaza. "Any initiative that doesn’t stop the aggression and end the siege on Gaza would not be acceptable to our people. That’s why the Egyptian initiative was rejected," Meshaal told Al-Monitor in a phone interview from Doha. Since 2007, in addition to the multiple wars between 2008-2009 and 2012, Israel has maintained a land, air and sea siege on the Gaza Strip that is crippling its economy and has largely destroyed the territory’s infrastructure.,,,

A Nation on the Brink: How US Policies Sealed Iraq's Fate (Dahr Jamail) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 --An Iraqi friend I've known since 2003, living in a predominantly Sunni neighborhood in Baghdad, emailed me recently. He had made it through the sectarian bloodletting of 2006 to 2007 in which many of his Sunni compatriots were killed or driven from the capital, and this is the picture he painted of what life is now like for him, his wife and their small children: All the dangers faced by Iraqis from the occupation - arrests, torture, car bombs, and sectarian violence - those killings have become like a toy in comparison to what we are facing these days. Fighting has spread in all directions from the north, east, and west of Baghdad... As a result of this fighting, we can't sleep because of our fear of the uncertainty of the situation, and because of the random arrests of innocent Sunni people. Each day I awake and find myself in a very hard and bad situation and now am trying to think of any way I can to leave here and save my family. Most of my neighbors left back when it was easier to leave. Now, we have both the US and Iran helping the Iraqi government, and this will only make the fighting that is going on across Iraq much worse...Every day, the Iraqi army is raiding homes and arresting many innocent people. So many dead bodies are to be found at the Baghdad morgue in the days following the mass arrests in Sunni areas...

Questions for UK Government over claims “heavy weather” destroyed renditions evidence (Reprieve) - 26-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - Claims made by the Government that possible evidence of UK involvement in renditions held in Diego Garcia was damaged by "extremely heavy weather" last month have been questioned by legal charity Reprieve, in the light of independent weather records suggesting there was no heavy rain during the period. Foreign Office ministers Mark Simmonds and Tobias Ellwood both told MPs this week that "extremely heavy weather in June 2014" had damaged flight records held in Diego Garcia, a British territory which the Government has admitted was used by CIA aircraft carrying detainees as part of its programme of 'extraordinary rendition.’..

Iraq snapshot - July 17, 2014 (The Common Ills) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - ...Nouri al-Maliki is a thug. The 'liberal' media -- Scott Horton's Antiwar Radio, Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! and so many others -- have whored for Nouri and they continue to whore for him. Yesterday on Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman continued her war against Iraqi Sunnis by booking noted Sunni hater Patrick Cockburn as well as the always ridiculous Hannah Allem (McClatchy Newspapers) who somehow, someway, just happens, repeatedly, to slant things so that Sunnis come off so badly. Now that Patrick's documented hatred of Sunnis has moved from Arabic social media into the mainstream media, we can ignore him and just zoom in on Hannah.... Hannah lies in July of 2014 that Shi'ite militias are reforming. Really? In the summer of 2014?...

Isolated weapons find in vacant UNRWA school cannot justify Israel’s Gaza slaughter (Ali Abunimah) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 -An incident, "the first of its kind," occurred today: UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, found weapons in one the hundreds of schools it runs in the Gaza Strip. The school was vacant and the weapons were quickly removed. It is important to highlight this incident because of how Israel and its apologists are alreading misusing and misrepresenting it to justify Israel’s massive and illegal bombardment of civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip... Israel has a long history of attacking and misusing UNRWA schools and making false claims about their misuse by Palestinian fighters...

Afghanistan's 'Forgotten Guantánamo' Rocked by Hunger Strikes (Sarah Lazare) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - Hunger strikes against segregated housing, unsanitary water, lack of access to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and more have swept the U.S. military's Bagram prison in Afghanistan, journalist Spencer Ackerman revealed Wednesday in the Guardian. News of the protests offers a rare glimpse into a prison that operates behind a wall of military secrecy, with even the identities of the 38 non-Afghan men held by the U.S. concealed from the public. The strikes were confirmed by Abdul Sattar, who hails from Pakistan and was formerly held at the prison for approximately 2.5 years before being released in May. Sattar told the Guardian that he participated in five or six hunger strikes, which decreased his body weight by 55 pounds...

A Navy Medical Officer’s Profound Act of Resistance to Force-Feeding Guantanamo Prisoners (By: Kevin Gosztola) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - A Navy medical officer recently refused to force-feed a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay. It is the first reported act of resistance to the regime of force-feeding since prisoners went on hunger strike eighteen months ago. According to Carol Rosenberg of the Miami Herald, Navy Captain Tom Gresback confirmed "a recent instance of a medical provider not willing to carry out the enteral feeding of a detainee." He indicated the matter was now "in the hands of the individual’s leadership." The officer refused to force-feed Abu Wael Dhiab. Cori Crider of Reprieve was called and informed by Dhiab that the Navy medical officer had refused to force-feed prisoner just before the Fourth of July. The officer "disappeared from detention center duty."...

Full Recognition of Palestinian Humanity
What’s Needed for Real Peace in Gaza
(by BRITAIN EAKIN) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - ... But despite its incessant claims to the contrary, Israel does have another choice. It can deal with the root causes of the conflict by accepting the Palestinian unity government, negotiating fairly with the Palestinians, ending the crippling and inhumane siege of Gaza and taking meaningful steps to end its nearly 50-year-long military occupation of Palestinian land. But this is simply not the option it has chosen to exercise. Until and unless there is recognition of and respect for Palestinian humanity and their inherent rights as an occupied people deserving of self-determination, the bloodshed and violence will continue. Without any accountability mechanism to persuade Israel to take this approach in negotiations, the way forward remains murky. In the meantime, analysts and journalists can do their part by treating Palestinians as actual human beings, deserving of safety and security, whose lives have value. The more we hear about Palestinians from Palestinians themselves, the better....

Is the Goal of Israel the Total Dispossession of the Palestinians?
The U.S., Israel and Oil Geopolitics
(by ROB URIE) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 -The standard line coming from political scientists, reporters and politicians is of Western governments acting in national 'interests’ to protect 'their’ citizens from military threats posed by other nations / peoples. This is certainly the frame U.S. President Barack Obama used in his recent editorial in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz to explain his, and U.S., support for the attack by Israel on the captive, immiserated civilian population of Gaza. Left out of Mr. Obama’s condolences to parents of the slain children alleged to be in part the motivation for the latest Israeli atrocities in Gaza is his own record of callously murdering between dozens and hundreds of women, children and innocent men throughout the Middle East and Africa in illegal drone 'strikes’ in recent years. Also left unsaid is the miraculous overlap of the nations and peoples subjected to U.S. wars of 'liberation / self-defense’ and proven oil reserves.

The human rights community’s consensus: Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza (Alex Kane) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - When the Israeli military wages assaults on Gaza, their spokesmen, former officials and sympathetic journalists blanket the airwaves to justify their military policies as targeted and precise. But during this attack on Gaza–and previous assaults–a consensus among human rights groups has emerged: Israel is committing war crimes in strikes that are wiping out civilians. Since the start of Israel’s "Operation Protective Edge," Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and United Nations officials–the heavyweights when it comes to interpreting international law–have all issued reports and statements slamming Israel for violations of international law. Those organizations have also said Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups firing rockets are committing war crimes since their volleys are indiscriminately aimed at Israeli civilians...

Witness to an International War Crime
Israeli State Terrorism in Gaza
(by AJAMU BARAKA) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - "Protective Edge," the cartoonish name given to the latest Israeli military offensive against the occupied people of Palestine, is representative of the inverted reality whereby the 1.7 million captive and largely defenseless Palestinians in Gaza are the vicious aggressors against the peace-loving settlers of Israel. Similar to the inverted reality in the U.S., where the myth of the innocent settler was created to justify the systematic slaughter of Indigenous peoples, the genocidal policies of Israel are camouflaged by the transformation of its position from an armed colonial invader to one of victim. This repositioning is aided and abetted in the U.S. by a corporate media whose world view and angle of reporting is framed by the innocent settler narrative. This narrative simultaneously liquidates and normalizes the colonial relationship between the colonizer and the colonized so that the occupied territories are not occupied but transformed into "disputed" territories and all forms of resistance on the part of Palestinians becomes terroristic...

Only the Insignias Change
Guernica, 1937 / Gaza, 2014
(by NORMAN POLLACK) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - April 26, 1937, late afternoon, German bombers higher in the air, Heinkel fighters just above treetops, bombed and strafed a small market town—the prelude to World War Two—crowded because it was market day, in effect, as Goering later said, a trial run to see what it takes to destroy a city—like eugenic experiments, this the perfection of the methodology and techniques of massive death and destruction. The population were mere guinea pigs, as all victims of war crimes, to the desensitized, dehumanized perpetrators of murder. Noel Monks, the British war correspondent, having survived the strafing of the Heinkel 52s on his way there, could see toward evening the flames of the city. "As we drew nearer," he writes, "on both sides of the road, men, women and children were sitting, dazed. I saw a priest in one group. I stopped the car and went up to him. 'What happened, Father?’ I asked. His face was blackened, his clothes in tatters. He couldn’t talk. He just pointed to the flames, still about four miles away, then whispered 'Aviones…bombas’…mucho, mucho.’"....

Nowhere is Safe
Life in Gaza Under Attack
(by ROBERT FANTINA) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 -Apartheid Israel has been bombing the Gaza Strip for several days now. News of the horrific terror Israel is perpetrating on the Palestinians is becoming somewhat easier to find, thanks mainly to social media. This writer has a friend, Walid Mohammed, who lives in Gaza; he has communicated some of that horror via Facebook, although his time to do so is limited, since electricity is not always available, and he must often flee Israel’s bombs. Mr. Mohammed has been hit by shrapnel, but fortunately is still alive. He tells this writer that he is not safe; there is nowhere that is safe in Gaza at the present time...

US State Department blames Hamas for Israel’s murder of Gaza children (Rania Khalek) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - The US State Department absolved Israel of responsibility for the murder of four Palestinian children in Gaza on Wednesday, placing the blame squarely on Hamas. The four children were killed and three others badly wounded by Israeli fire as they played on a beach in Gaza on Wednesday afternoon. Dozens of international journalists stationed at the nearby Al-Deira Hotel watched in horror as after an initial strike, Israeli fire chased after the terrified children as they ran for their lives screaming for help, firing at them a second time...

Gaza’s future on hold as families wait out Israel’s bombing (Rami Almeghari) - 25-jul-2014

July 17, 2014 - In a home in the alleyways of Maghazi refugee camp in the central the Gaza Strip lives Abdulbari al-Tallaa, a retired Palestinian Authority police officer. Al-Tallaa is known as Abu Yazeed, after his oldest child, 22-year-old Yazeed. He and his seven-member family, plus eight-year-old grandson Qassim, had broken another day of Ramadan fasting and were gathered for a meal during a blackout. Gaza households don’t have electricity for at least twelve hours per day after Israeli airstrikes damaged electricity networks. Abu Yazeed and his wife, Um Yazeed, along with their five daughters and only son, have been stuck inside their home for more than one week now...
